Objective

Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the factors contributing to ground resonance onset, recognize ground resonance symptoms, and demonstrate knowledge of proper recovery procedures in accordance with FAA-S-ACS-15 PH.VIII.I.

Content

Definition and Nature of Ground Resonance

Ground resonance is a potentially destructive oscillation that occurs when the helicopter’s rotor system and fuselage interact in a harmonic frequency while the aircraft is on the ground. This phenomenon is unique to helicopters with articulated rotor systems and can result in catastrophic structural damage if not immediately corrected.

Think of ground resonance like a washing machine with an unbalanced load - what starts as a small vibration quickly builds into violent shaking that can destroy the machine. In helicopters, this “unbalanced load” is created when the rotor blades become out of phase with each other.

Factors Contributing to Ground Resonance Onset

Per 14 CFR 27.251 and 29.251, manufacturers must demonstrate that ground resonance will not occur within the normal operating range. However, several factors can still contribute to its onset:

Recognition of Ground Resonance

Early recognition is critical because ground resonance can progress from onset to destruction in seconds. Visual and physical cues include:

The key is recognizing that ANY unusual lateral movement or vibration during ground operations should be treated as potential ground resonance.

Recovery Procedure Selection

Recovery procedures depend on the phase of flight and severity of the condition:

Ground Operations with Collective Down:

  1. Immediately reduce throttle to flight idle
  2. Apply rotor brake if equipped and safe to do so
  3. Allow rotor system to spool down
  4. Never attempt to lift off during active ground resonance

Ground Operations with Collective Up:

  1. Smoothly and immediately lift off to a hover
  2. Once airborne and stable, land normally
  3. Shut down and inspect aircraft before further flight

Critical Decision Point: The decision between lifting off or shutting down must be made instantly. If the helicopter is already light on the skids with sufficient power available, immediate liftoff is often the best option. If collective is down and power is insufficient for immediate liftoff, shut down immediately.
