Objective
Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to safely conduct hover taxi operations in accordance with FAA-S-ACS-15 Area of Operation IV, Task B. The student will demonstrate the ability to:
- Explain hover taxi procedures, limitations, and risk management considerations per 14 CFR Part 91 operating rules
- Interpret airport/heliport signs, markings, lighting, and visual wind indicators
- Execute hover taxi maneuvers maintaining ground track within ±4 feet and hovering altitude within prescribed ACS tolerances
- Perform 360° pivoting turns stopping within 10° of specified headings

Regulatory Foundation
Hover taxi operations are governed by 14 CFR 91.129 (operations in Class D airspace), 91.126 (operations at non-towered airports), and 91.113 (right-of-way rules). Per 14 CFR 91.3, the pilot-in-command remains responsible for the safe operation of the aircraft during all phases of flight, including hover taxi.
Airport/Heliport Information Resources
Current aeronautical information is critical for safe hover taxi operations. Minimize time spent in this region and be prepared for immediate touchdown if power failure occurs.
Aircraft Operating Limitations
Consult the Rotorcraft Flight Manual for specific hover taxi limitations including maximum gross weight for hovering, density altitude limitations, and wind limitations. Power required increases significantly with gross weight, density altitude, and wind conditions. Never exceed demonstrated crosswind limits or attempt hover operations beyond the aircraft’s performance capability.
Risk Management Elements
Distractions and Situational Awareness: Task prioritization is crucial during hover taxi. Primary tasks include aircraft control and obstacle avoidance. Reduced Visibility Operations: Night or low visibility hover taxi requires increased caution. Use landing lights judiciously to avoid glare reflection off surfaces. Aircraft, Vehicles, and Personnel Hazards: Helicopters create unique hazards due to main rotor disc diameter and tail rotor location. Maintain adequate clearance from all obstacles - the main rotor disc extends well beyond the fuselage. Be especially cautious around linemen, fuel trucks, and other aircraft.
Downwash Effects: Rotor downwash can exceed 100 mph directly below the aircraft, decreasing with distance from the rotor disc. This creates hazards for personnel, loose objects, and light aircraft. Consider downwash effects when hover taxiing near hangars, parked aircraft, or personnel areas.
Rotor Strike Hazards: Main rotor clearance decreases with cyclic displacement and aircraft attitude changes. Tail rotor position varies significantly during pedal inputs. Maintain constant awareness of rotor clearance, especially in confined areas or near obstacles.
Confirmation Bias: Don’t assume taxi instructions match your expectations. Read back all clearances and verify their accuracy. If a clearance seems unusual or unclear, ask for clarification rather than proceeding based on assumptions.
