Objective

Upon completion of this lesson, the student will demonstrate proficiency in helicopter traffic pattern operations at both towered and non-towered airports/heliports by performing traffic pattern entries, departures, and circuits while maintaining proper altitude (±100 feet), airspeed (±10 knots), and situational awareness in accordance with FAA-S-ACS-15 Area of Operation III, Task C.

Regulatory Foundation

Traffic pattern operations are governed by 14 CFR 91.126 (non-towered airports), 14 CFR 91.127 (airports with operating control towers), and 14 CFR 91.129 (Class D airspace). The Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) Chapter 4 provides detailed guidance on airport operations and traffic patterns.

  1. Begin with weather briefing using current ATIS/AWOS information, emphasizing wind conditions and active runways while demonstrating proper information interpretation techniques.

  2. Review airport diagram with student, identifying runway numbers, taxiways, pattern directions, and any unique features or restrictions specific to the training airport.

  3. Demonstrate proper radio phraseology for both towered and non-towered environments, emphasizing clear, concise communications and standard position reporting procedures.

  4. Explain wind correction principles using wind triangle concepts, showing how to determine crab angle and ground track corrections for maintaining proper pattern geometry.

  5. Conduct thorough pre-flight inspection focusing on items critical for airport operations including radios, transponder, and navigation equipment functionality.

  6. Demonstrate pattern entry procedures at towered airport, showing proper ATC communication, clearance acknowledgment, and compliance with assigned altitudes and routing.

  7. Fly demonstration pattern emphasizing altitude control within ±100 feet, airspeed maintenance within ±10 knots, and proper spacing from other traffic.

  8. Show wind correction techniques during each pattern leg, particularly demonstrating crab adjustments on crosswind and final approach legs.

  9. Transit to non-towered airport while explaining frequency changes, weather monitoring, and traffic awareness techniques during cross-country portion.

  10. Demonstrate CTAF procedures including pattern entry announcement, position reports, and landing intentions while maintaining situational awareness of other traffic.

  11. Coach student through practice patterns, providing real-time feedback on altitude, airspeed, spacing, and radio communications.

  12. Create scenarios involving traffic conflicts, ATC instructions, and weather changes to test student decision-making and prioritization skills.

  13. Debrief each pattern sequence immediately after completion, highlighting successful techniques and identifying areas requiring additional practice.

  14. Conclude with comprehensive performance assessment addressing all ACS knowledge, risk management, and skill requirements.

The student demonstrates satisfactory performance when able to:

  1. Identify and interpret airport features (FAA-S-ACS-15 PH.III.C) by correctly reading runway numbers, recognizing taxiway markings, and explaining the meaning of airport lighting systems with 100% accuracy.

  2. Comply with traffic pattern procedures (FAA-S-ACS-15 PH.III.C) by executing proper pattern entries, maintaining correct pattern altitudes and airspeeds, and following published or assigned procedures without deviation.

  3. Maintain altitude within ±100 feet (FAA-S-ACS-15 PH.III.C) throughout all pattern legs while simultaneously controlling airspeed within ±10 knots of target speeds.

  4. Demonstrate wind drift correction (FAA-S-ACS-15 PH.III.C) by maintaining intended ground track within 50 feet of pattern centerline using appropriate crab angles and heading adjustments.

  5. Maintain runway orientation (FAA-S-ACS-15 PH.III.C) by keeping the active runway in sight throughout pattern operations and correctly identifying runway/landing area alignment.

  6. Demonstrate proper traffic spacing (FAA-S-ACS-15 PH.III.C) by maintaining at least 500 feet separation from other aircraft and avoiding interference with fixed-wing traffic flow.

  7. Execute correct radio procedures by making all required position reports at non-towered airports and properly acknowledging ATC communications at towered facilities using standard phraseology.

  8. Apply risk management principles by continuously scanning for traffic, identifying wake turbulence hazards, recognizing windshear conditions, and maintaining situational awareness throughout pattern operations.

  9. Respond appropriately to traffic conflicts by taking immediate evasive action, communicating intentions clearly, and applying right-of-way rules correctly in accordance with 14 CFR 91.113.

  10. Complete pattern operations without exceeding aircraft limitations, violating airspace restrictions, or creating hazardous situations for other aircraft or persons on the ground.
