Objective
Upon completion of this lesson, the student will demonstrate knowledge of National Airspace System (NAS) requirements and regulations by correctly identifying airspace classes, special use airspace, and associated operational requirements on sectional charts, and explaining compliance procedures for helicopter VFR operations in accordance with FAA-S-ACS-15 PH.I.E.K1, K2, K3, and K4.

Introduction to the National Airspace System
The National Airspace System is like a three-dimensional highway system in the sky. Just as we have different types of roads with different speed limits and rules, we have different classes of airspace with varying requirements. As helicopter pilots, we operate primarily under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and need to understand where we can fly and what’s required.
Airspace Classes and Associated Requirements (14 CFR 91.155, 91.157, 91.129, 91.130, 91.131)
Class A Airspace (18,000 feet MSL to FL600)
- IFR operations only - helicopters rarely operate here
- ATC clearance required
- Mode C transponder required
- Two-way radio communication required
Class B Airspace (Surface to 10,000 feet MSL typically)
- ATC clearance required before entering
- Mode C transponder required within and above
- Two-way radio communication required
- Student pilot endorsement required for solo operations (14 CFR 61.95)
- VFR weather minimums: 3 SM visibility, clear of clouds
Class C Airspace (Surface to 4,000 feet AGL typically)
- Two-way radio communication required
- Mode C transponder required within and above
- No specific clearance required, but must establish communication
- VFR weather minimums: 3 SM visibility, 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 2,000 feet horizontal from clouds
Class D Airspace (Surface to 2,500 feet AGL typically)
- Two-way radio communication required
- No transponder requirement (unless specifically noted)
- VFR weather minimums: 3 SM visibility, 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 2,000 feet horizontal from clouds
- Operations when tower closed: airspace reverts to Class E or G

- No ATC services provided
- No communication requirements
- VFR weather minimums: Day operations - 1 SM visibility, clear of clouds (below 1,200 feet AGL); Night operations - 3 SM visibility, 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 2,000 feet horizontal
Chart Symbols and Interpretation
Sectional charts use specific symbols and colors to depict airspace:
- Solid blue lines: Class B airspace
- Solid magenta lines: Class C airspace
- Dashed blue lines: Class D airspace
- Magenta shaded areas: Class E surface areas
- Airport symbols indicate controlled vs. uncontrolled airports
- Numbers in boxes show airspace altitudes (e.g., “SFC/4000” means surface to 4,000 feet)

Restricted Areas

- High-volume military training
- VFR aircraft not prohibited but should exercise caution
- IFR aircraft separated by ATC

Alert Areas
- High volume of pilot training or unusual aerial activity
- No regulatory restrictions
- Exercise caution when transiting
National Security Areas
- Voluntary flight restrictions for security reasons
- Pilots requested to avoid or operate under specified conditions
Temporary Flight Restrictions (14 CFR 91.137, 91.138, 91.141, 91.145)
TFRs established for:
- Disaster relief operations
- Hazardous conditions (wildfires, chemical spills)
- Special events (sporting events, VIP movements)
- Security reasons
- Space operations

Special Flight Rules Areas (SFRA)
Washington DC SFRA
- Special training and endorsements required
- Flight plan required for all operations

Risk Management Considerations
Operating in various airspace classes presents different risks:
- Communication failures in controlled airspace
- Altitude deviations leading to airspace violations

Special VFR Requirements (14 CFR 91.157)
Special VFR operations allow flight in less than basic VFR weather minimums within Class B, C, D, or E surface areas when:
- ATC authorization received
- Pilot meets currency requirements
- Aircraft equipped appropriately
- 1 statute mile flight visibility minimum
- Clear of clouds requirement
- Ground speed restrictions may apply
Night Special VFR prohibited unless pilot holds instrument rating and aircraft is instrument equipped.
