Objective

The student will demonstrate commercial pilot-level proficiency in conducting before takeoff checks in a helicopter, understanding the purpose of each checklist item, detecting potential malfunctions, and properly configuring the aircraft for departure. Upon completion, the student will consistently perform systematic before takeoff checks with proper division of attention, maintain all powerplant parameters within limits, verify takeoff performance data, and correctly respond to ATC clearances, meeting the performance standards of ACS CH.II.D.

Purpose of Before Takeoff Checklist Items (CH.II.D.K1)

The before takeoff check is the final systematic verification that the helicopter is properly configured and operating normally before flight. Unlike the private pilot who simply follows checklist items, the commercial pilot must understand why each item matters—this deeper understanding enables you to detect subtle abnormalities that might not trigger obvious warnings.

Takeoff Performance Review (CH.II.D.S2): Before every takeoff, you must verify the helicopter can safely complete the planned departure given current weight, density altitude, wind, and surface conditions. This isn’t optional—it’s required airmanship and risk management.

Division of Attention While Conducting Before Takeoff Checks (CH.II.D.R1):

The before takeoff check occurs in a high-workload environment: you’re often on an active ramp or taxiway, monitoring ATC, watching for traffic, maintaining helicopter position, and completing checklist items simultaneously. Improper division of attention causes three common commercial pilot errors:

  1. Checklist fixation: Student becomes heads-down reading checklist while helicopter drifts, traffic approaches unnoticed, or ATC issues clearance that’s missed

    • Mitigation: Use flow patterns first, then back up with written checklist; develop muscle memory for check sequences so you can look up between items; never spend more than 3-5 seconds heads-down at once
  2. Traffic pattern interruptions: Other aircraft request taxi, ATC issues instructions, or ground vehicles approach during your checks

    • Mitigation: When interrupted, mark your place on checklist; don’t continue from memory after interruption—restart from marked point; if workload becomes excessive, request delay from ATC: “Helicopter 123 will need 2 minutes for final checks”
  3. Rushing due to external pressure: Tower issuing takeoff clearance while you’re mid-checklist; helicopter running on hot day making you hurry

    • Mitigation: Commercial professionalism means never accepting a clearance before you’re ready; appropriate response: “Helicopter 123, we’ll need another minute for before takeoff checks” or “Helicopter 123, ready to copy clearance when you’re ready, we’ll need about two minutes before departure”

Scan pattern discipline: Effective technique: Flow inside → look outside for traffic → flow inside next section → look outside → complete checklist verification. Your eyes should sweep the full 360° visual arc at least every 10-15 seconds during ground operations.

Unexpected or Unclear Clearances from ATC (CH.II.D.R2):

Commercial helicopter operations often involve complex ATC environments: Class B/C airspace, tower-controlled airports, special use airspace, and non-standard helicopter routes. Unclear or unexpected clearances create several risks:

Common unclear clearance scenarios:

Professional response to unclear clearances: Never accept a clearance you don’t fully understand or cannot comply with safely. This isn’t student behavior—it’s required professional conduct under 14 CFR 91.123(a): “When a pilot is uncertain of an ATC clearance, that pilot shall immediately request clarification from ATC.”

Risk of assumption: Assuming you understand when you don’t causes deviations, pilot deviations, and potential accidents. ATC controllers aren’t always familiar with helicopter capabilities and limitations—you might receive a clearance meant for an airplane. You’re the pilot in command under 14 CFR 91.3(a); you’re responsible for safe operation even if following an ATC clearance.

Every helicopter has specific before takeoff configuration requirements in the RFM/POH. Common items requiring exact manufacturer compliance:

Configuration errors and detection: Improper configuration causes performance degradation or system failures during takeoff—the highest workload, lowest altitude phase of flight where you have minimum time to respond.

Commercial Pilot Considerations

As a commercial pilot under 14 CFR 61.133, you have privileges to carry passengers for hire, conduct aerial work, and operate for compensation. This changes your before takeoff responsibilities:

Passenger briefings must be complete before starting the checklist: You can’t safely brief passengers while completing before takeoff checks—division of attention will cause missed items or inadequate passenger safety information.

External load operations require additional checks: If configured for external loads (14 CFR 133), verify cargo hook electrical system, mirror positioning, load calculations complete, release system operational.

Professional standard of care: Courts hold commercial pilots to higher standards than private pilots. An incomplete before takeoff check that results in accident or incident will be scrutinized against 14 CFR 61.133, 91.13 (careless/reckless), and whether you exercised the level of care expected of a commercial helicopter pilot.

  1. Brief lesson objectives and commercial pilot standards: “Today we’re focusing on the before takeoff check from a commercial pilot perspective. This isn’t the basic ‘read and do’ checklist work from your private training. You need to understand the purpose of each item, what malfunctions you’re trying to detect, and how to manage your attention in a busy environment. By the end of this lesson, you’ll perform the before takeoff check systematically and efficiently while maintaining full situational awareness—the standard expected of a commercial helicopter pilot who might be carrying passengers or conducting aerial work.”

  2. Review ACS performance standards CH.II.D: “The ACS requires you to complete the appropriate checklist, review takeoff performance and emergency procedures, verify all powerplant parameters are suitable for takeoff, maintain Nr within normal limits, and divide your attention effectively inside and outside the aircraft. Every one of these is measurable, and I’ll be evaluating your performance against these specific standards.”

  3. Explain the purpose of each checklist category using real examples: “Let’s start with flight controls. You’re not just moving the cyclic around randomly. You’re feeling for binding, checking for full range of motion, and detecting anything unusual. I once had a student who did a controls check and everything moved fine—but there was a slight grinding feeling in the cyclic aft movement. We shut down and found a bolt backing out of the cyclic linkage. In another 30 minutes of flight, that bolt would have fallen out completely. That’s what you’re looking for—subtle abnormalities that indicate developing problems.”

  4. Discuss powerplant instrument interpretation beyond green arc recognition: “Oil temperature isn’t just ‘in the green’ or ‘not in the green.’ If oil temp is normally 180°F after warm-up and today it’s only showing 140°F on a similar temperature day, something has changed. Maybe the gauge is failing, maybe there’s an oil cooler issue. You need to know what’s normal for your aircraft and recognize deviations. Same with oil pressure—a slow drop during your checks might mean you’re losing oil or the pump is failing.”

  5. Demonstrate governor/RPM check with both normal and simulated abnormal scenarios: “Watch what happens when I raise the collective with the governor on. The throttle automatically advances, Nr stays constant, and the needles stay joined. Now I’ll show you what it looks like if the governor fails—the needles split, Nr starts to droop, and you’ll hear the low rotor horn. This is why we check governor function on the ground where we have time to troubleshoot, not during takeoff when we need it most.”

  6. Teach systematic scan pattern for division of attention: “Here’s the technique I use and I want you to develop: complete one section of the checklist, then eyes up and outside for a 360° sweep for traffic and clearances. Takes about five seconds. Then back inside for the next section. Never go more than 10-15 seconds without looking outside. Even at a quiet airport, aircraft can appear quickly. At a busy airport with tower communications, you need that outside awareness or you’ll miss taxi instructions, traffic advisories, or changing conditions.”

  7. Explain ATC communication professionalism for unclear clearances: “If you get a clearance you don’t understand or didn’t hear completely, you say: ‘Helicopter 123, say again’ or ‘Helicopter 123, confirm you want…’ and repeat what you think they said. Never fly an unclear clearance hoping you got it right. Controllers are human; they make mistakes, misspeak, or aren’t familiar with helicopter operations. You’re the pilot in command. It’s your responsibility to understand every clearance before you comply with it.”

  8. Demonstrate calculating takeoff performance for current conditions: “Let’s work through the performance planning for this takeoff. Current field elevation is 850 feet MSL, temperature is 28°C, altimeter is 30.02. First, I calculate pressure altitude: 850 feet plus [29.92 - 30.02] × 1,000 = 850 - 100 = 750 feet pressure altitude. Now I’ll use the density altitude chart with 750 feet PA and 28°C—that gives us about 2,100 feet density altitude. Now I go to the HOGE performance chart with our current gross weight of 2,200 pounds and 2,100 feet DA. The chart shows we need about 85% torque to hover in ground effect. Our engine produces 100% torque available at this altitude and temperature, so we have adequate power margin. This is the process you’ll use before every takeoff.”

  9. Brief emergency procedures specific to the departure environment: “Before we take off, let’s review what we’ll do if we have an engine failure during takeoff. We’re departing from a 100-foot wide runway with clear area on both sides. Our takeoff profile will keep us out of the avoid area of the height-velocity curve—we’ll accelerate in ground effect to translational lift speed, then climb at Vy. If we lose the engine during the acceleration phase below 10 feet, I’ll land straight ahead with available collective. If we lose it during the climb above 40 feet AGL, I’ll enter autorotation, lower the nose to maintain 60 knots and Nr, and select the clear area off the left side of the departure path. Any questions about that plan?”

  10. Conduct first demonstration in the aircraft, talking through each item: “Watch how I organize this check. I start with the flight controls—full forward, full aft, full left, full right, feeling for smooth motion and correct response. Now I’m bringing the cyclic to neutral and checking collective full down, full up. Pedals full left, full right. Everything moves freely with no binding. Now I’m checking the engine instruments: oil temperature 185°F—normal for this helicopter after warm-up; oil pressure 55 PSI—right in the middle of the green; MGT 720°C at idle—normal; fuel pressure 18 PSI—normal. Notice I’m not just looking at the green arcs—I’m reading actual values and comparing them to what I know is normal.”

  11. Demonstrate governor check with explanation of what to feel and hear: “Now I’ll check the governor function. Collective up slowly—throttle automatically advancing, Nr holding steady at 102%, needles joined, no split. Good. Collective back down—throttle correlating, Nr still steady. Governor is functioning normally. If those needles split or Nr droops when I raise collective, the governor isn’t working and we’re not taking off until it’s fixed.”

  12. Show effective scan pattern during checklist completion: “Notice after checking those instruments, I immediately look up and outside—quick 360° scan for traffic. No aircraft moving on the ramp or taxiway. Now I’m back inside for the next section: hydraulic systems. I’ll cycle the hydraulics off, feel for increased control forces—yes, much heavier—now hydraulics back on, forces immediately light again. System is functioning. Now back outside for another scan. This constant inside-outside-inside-outside pattern is critical. You maintain awareness of your environment while completing checklist items systematically.”

  13. Introduce interruption scenario during demonstration: “Here’s a common situation: I’m halfway through the checklist and tower calls: ‘Helicopter 123, taxi to runway 27, hold short of 27.’ What do I do? First, I mark my place on the checklist—I’m at the radios section. Then I acknowledge: ‘Helicopter 123, taxi to runway 27, hold short.’ Now I taxi, but I don’t continue the checklist from memory. Once I’m stopped at the hold short line, I restart from where I marked—radios section—and complete the remaining items. Never trust yourself to remember where you were after an interruption.”

  14. Demonstrate proper response to unclear ATC clearance: “Let’s say tower gives me: ‘Helicopter 123, turn crosswind.’ That’s unclear because helicopters can turn immediately after liftoff while airplanes need to maintain runway heading first. Do they want me to turn now or does ‘crosswind’ mean something specific here? Professional response: ‘Helicopter 123, confirm you want us to turn crosswind immediately after takeoff?’ Controller responds: ‘Helicopter 123, affirmative, turn left crosswind immediately after takeoff, remain at or below 500 feet until past the departure end.’ Now I understand exactly what they want.”

  15. Allow student to perform complete before takeoff check with minimal guidance: “Your aircraft. I want you to perform the complete before takeoff check using the checklist. Work through each item systematically, maintain your scan outside, and explain to me what you’re checking and what you’re looking for. Take your time—accuracy matters more than speed right now.”

  16. Observe student technique and note errors without immediate correction: While student performs check, instructor observes: division of attention, completeness of items, understanding of what’s being checked, scan pattern, checklist discipline. Make notes but allow student to complete full sequence before providing feedback.

  17. Provide specific feedback on observed performance: “Good systematic approach on that check. I noticed three things: First, you spent about 20 seconds heads-down on the instrument scan section without looking outside—that’s too long. Break that section into smaller chunks with outside scans between. Second, when you checked the flight controls, you moved the cyclic but I didn’t hear you say anything about what you were feeling. Tell me what you’re detecting—smooth motion, no binding, full range. Third, excellent job maintaining Nr throughout the check—stayed right at 102% the entire time. Let’s run it again incorporating those corrections.”

  18. Introduce simulated abnormal indication scenario: “This time I want you to run the before takeoff check, but I’m going to simulate an abnormal indication. When you discover it, tell me what you found, what it means, and what action you’re taking. Here’s the scenario: you’re conducting your check and you notice oil pressure is reading 25 PSI when normal is 50-60 PSI. What do you do?”

  19. Evaluate student’s response to abnormal indication and decision-making: Listen for: recognition that oil pressure is abnormally low, understanding that this could indicate oil pump failure or low oil quantity, decision to shut down and not attempt takeoff, communication of the issue to ATC or ground personnel if applicable.

  20. Introduce simulated unclear ATC clearance scenario: “You’ve completed your before takeoff check and you’re ready to go. Tower calls: ‘Helicopter 123, wind 270 at 12, cleared for takeoff, turn eastbound.’ You weren’t expecting an immediate turn eastbound; your flight plan shows departure to the north. What’s your response?”

  21. Evaluate student’s ATC communication and clarification request: Listen for: recognition that clearance conflicts with flight plan, immediate request for clarification, professional phraseology, not accepting clearance until understood, proper read-back when clarification received.

  22. Conduct supervised repetitions until student demonstrates consistency: “Run the complete check two more times. I want to see the same systematic approach, proper scan pattern, and accurate completion every time. Commercial pilot standard means consistency—you perform this check the same correct way whether it’s your first flight of the day or your fifth.”

  23. Debrief student performance against ACS standards: “Let’s review your performance against the ACS completion standards. You completed the appropriate checklist 100%—good. You reviewed takeoff performance and briefed emergency procedures—good. You verified all powerplant temperatures and pressures suitable for takeoff—good. You maintained Nr within normal limits throughout—excellent, never varied more than 2% from target. Division of attention inside and outside—this improved significantly by the third repetition. Initially you were too heads-down, but by the end you had a good rhythm with outside scans every 10-15 seconds. Overall, you’re meeting the standard, and with practice this will become second nature.”

  24. Assign practice requirements and self-assessment criteria: “Before our next flight lesson, I want you to review the checklist and be able to explain the purpose of every item—not just what you do, but why you do it and what malfunction you’re trying to detect. On every flight from now on, I expect this same systematic, thorough before takeoff check. You should be able to complete it in about 3-4 minutes at this point while maintaining full situational awareness. If you find yourself taking longer than five minutes or missing outside scans, slow down and rebuild the proper technique.”

  25. Answer questions and verify understanding of completion standards: “What questions do you have about the before takeoff check, the ACS standards, or how I’ll be evaluating this task on your checkride preparation flights? Remember, on your commercial checkride, the examiner expects you to perform this check without prompting, explain what you’re looking for, and demonstrate professional communication if you receive unclear clearances or discover abnormalities.”

  13. Perform multiple repetitions of complete before takeoff check, developing consistency and efficiency while maintaining accuracy and situational awareness.

  14. Evaluate own performance against ACS standards, identifying specific areas meeting standard and areas requiring continued practice.

  15. Demonstrate understanding of when to delay takeoff if checklist cannot be completed without interruption, when to request progressive taxi if unfamiliar with airport, and when to refuse clearance if not ready.

  16. Complete practice session by performing one complete before takeoff check meeting all ACS standards with minimal instructor input.

  17. Ask questions during debrief about any errors made, areas of confusion, or techniques for improvement.

  18. Review completion standards and commit to performing the same systematic, thorough check on all future flights to build consistency and professionalism.

  19. Demonstrate ability to teach back the purpose of at least three critical checklist items, explaining what malfunction each detects and why it matters.

  20. Verbally commit to self-assessment on future flights by evaluating own before takeoff check performance against the ACS standards and continuously improving division of attention and checklist discipline.
