Objective
The CFII candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach human behavior principles and effective communication techniques to an instrument student. Upon completion, the candidate will explain how to apply psychological understanding and communication skills to improve instrument instruction effectiveness, recognize student defense mechanisms and needs, and employ strategies that create productive learning relationships in the high-workload IFR helicopter environment. Human Behavior — Control of Human Behavior
Fundamental Principles
Human behavior cannot be directly controlled—it can only be influenced through understanding and manipulation of motivating factors. As a CFII, you cannot force a student to learn, but you can create conditions that make learning desirable and probable.
Three Primary Methods of Influence:

Fear-based control — Threatening checkride failure, certificate action, or negative evaluation. While this may produce short-term compliance, it creates anxiety that interferes with learning, particularly in the IFR environment where stress already runs high. A student afraid of making mistakes will hide errors rather than discuss them, creating dangerous knowledge gaps.

Relationship-based influence — Students perform to maintain your approval and respect. This works well in the short term but creates dependency. When you’re not present, motivation disappears. The instrument student who flies precisely only when the instructor is watching has not internalized safe IFR behavior.

Personal motivation — The student wants to learn for intrinsic reasons: career advancement, personal accomplishment, love of flying. This produces lasting behavioral change and self-correcting habits. The instrument pilot who understands why precise altitude control matters will maintain ±100 feet whether in training, on a checkride, or flying single-pilot IFR years later.
Application to Helicopter Instrument Training:
Help students connect IFR procedures to their personal goals. Instead of “You must maintain ±100 feet or you’ll fail the checkride” (fear), try “Precise altitude control keeps you in the protected airspace where obstacle clearance is guaranteed—that’s what separates professional helicopter pilots from Sunday flyers, and that’s what you’re working toward” (personal motivation). When a student nails an ILS to minimums in actual IMC for the first time, they discover intrinsic satisfaction that no external reward matches.
Human Behavior — Human Needs
Maslow’s Hierarchy Applied to Flight Training
Students cannot focus on higher-level learning when fundamental needs remain unmet. As an instructor, you must recognize where students are on this hierarchy:
Physiological Needs — Food, water, rest, comfort. The student who skipped breakfast and is fighting airsickness while trying to shoot an approach in moderate turbulence cannot learn. Their entire cognitive capacity focuses on not vomiting. Schedule breaks, carry water, monitor student condition. IFR training is physically demanding—headset pressure, vibration, scanning fatigue, and vestibular conflict create real physical stress.
Safety and Security — Freedom from danger and anxiety. Many helicopter students transitioning to instruments feel vulnerable giving up visual references. They need reassurance that you’re monitoring, that you won’t let them get into trouble, that making mistakes is part of learning. A student who feels unsafe cannot process new information. Before practicing unusual attitudes under the hood, brief thoroughly, demonstrate your monitoring, establish clear recovery procedures.
Social Belonging — Acceptance by the group. Instrument students often feel isolated from their VFR-only peers. Acknowledge that IFR training is difficult, that everyone struggles with partial panel NDB approaches, that they’re joining an elite group. Create community through shared experience rather than competition.
Esteem and Recognition — Achievement, respect, confidence. Provide specific recognition for improvement: “Your approach plate briefing was thorough and well-organized—that’s exactly the discipline single-pilot IFR requires.” Avoid empty praise. Helicopter instrument pilots develop deep professional pride; tap into that.
Self-Actualization — Reaching full potential. The advanced student who masters coupled approaches and RNAV holds in actual IMC experiences genuine self-actualization. Your role shifts from instructor to mentor, helping them explore the full scope of IFR helicopter operations.
Practical Example:
Student arrives for a lesson visibly stressed about family issues (unmet security needs). They cannot focus on learning magnetic compass errors. Acknowledge the distraction, shorten the lesson, focus on review rather than new material, or reschedule. Pushing forward wastes time and creates negative associations with training.
Human Behavior — Defense Mechanisms
Defense mechanisms are subconscious psychological strategies people employ to protect ego and self-image when faced with unpleasant realities. In instrument training, students frequently encounter situations that challenge their competence and identity as pilots. Recognizing defense mechanisms allows you to address underlying issues rather than arguing with symptoms.
Common Defense Mechanisms in IFR Training:
Rationalization — Justifying poor performance with seemingly logical excuses. “I was high on the glideslope because the wind shifted” when the real issue is poor scan technique. The student creates a story that protects their self-image as a competent pilot.
Instructor response: Don’t argue about the excuse—address the underlying fear of appearing incompetent. “That approach was challenging. Let’s break down exactly what happened with the scan pattern. Everyone struggles with glideslope tracking initially—it’s a new skill. Show me your scan sequence from the FAF inbound.”
Denial — Refusing to acknowledge problems exist. “My altitude control is fine” while oscillating ±300 feet throughout the approach. The student literally cannot see the problem because acknowledging it threatens their self-concept.
Instructor response: Provide objective evidence without judgment. Record altitude deviations in writing during the approach. During debrief, show the data: “What patterns do you notice in these numbers?” Let them discover the problem rather than forcing it on them.
Projection — Blaming others for personal shortcomings. “This helicopter’s VSI is terrible—that’s why I can’t hold altitude” or “You’re making me nervous with all your talking.” The student transfers responsibility externally.
Instructor response: Separate legitimate equipment issues from projection. If the VSI truly lags, demonstrate with a reference. If the student is projecting, acknowledge their frustration while redirecting: “I hear that my talking is distracting. Let’s work on your scan pattern so it’s automatic enough that you can filter out distractions—because ATC won’t stop talking during your ILS to minimums.”
Resignation — Giving up when faced with difficulty. “I’ll never get partial panel—I’m just not coordinated enough.” The student protects ego by quitting before they can fail.
Instructor response: Break the overwhelming task into achievable steps. “You’re right that partial panel is demanding. Nobody masters it in one flight. Today we’re just going to work on straight and level using turn coordinator and altimeter. That’s all. Can you do that?” Build success incrementally.
Fantasy — Escaping reality through daydreaming or imagining success without work. The student who talks constantly about flying IFR cross-countries but won’t practice basic holding patterns is living in fantasy.
Instructor response: Connect fantasy to concrete steps. “That Seattle-to-San-Francisco IFR flight sounds incredible. Let’s map out exactly what skills you need to make it happen safely. What approaches would you likely fly? What icing considerations? What happens if you lose GPS?” Make the fantasy concrete and achievable through systematic work.
Compensation — Overemphasizing strengths to mask weaknesses. The student who files beautiful flight plans and briefs approaches perfectly but can’t fly them is compensating. Cognitive work feels safe; actual flying threatens their ego.
Instructor response: Acknowledge the strength while addressing the gap. “Your flight planning is outstanding—that’s professional-level work. Now let’s bring your hand-flying skills up to that same standard. You clearly have the mental capability; we just need stick time.”
Human Behavior — The Flight Instructor as Practical Psychologist
Understanding the Role
You are not a licensed psychologist, but you are a practical one. Your role requires understanding motivation, recognizing emotional states, managing anxiety, and creating conditions for behavioral change. This becomes critical in instrument training where students face legitimate fears—IMC is unforgiving, helicopter IFR has genuine risks, and mistakes can be fatal.
Key Psychological Skills for IFR Instructors:
Observation — Monitor subtle cues. Rapid breathing indicates rising anxiety. Gripping controls tightly suggests tension. Silence after a radio call might mean cognitive overload. A student who repeatedly “forgets” to call for clearances might be avoiding ATC anxiety.
Diagnosis — Distinguish between skill deficiencies and psychological barriers. Can’t maintain altitude (skill problem) versus won’t look at altimeter (psychological barrier, often fear of confirming they’re wrong).
Intervention — Choose teaching strategies that address the real problem. If the issue is psychological, more practice won’t help. A student afraid of actual IMC needs graduated exposure and confidence-building, not criticism for showing fear.
Patience — Learning plateaus are normal, especially in instrument training where the cognitive load is enormous. Students often regress before breakthrough moments. Your steady confidence helps them persist through difficult periods.
Practical Application in Helicopter IFR:
A student consistently goes high on ILS approaches. You’ve practiced glideslope tracking extensively. Skill level is adequate. What’s happening?
Through observation and gentle questioning, you discover they’re unconsciously protecting against what they perceive as the catastrophic risk of going low. Their private pilot training emphasized “never duck under” so strongly that they’ve developed a psychological barrier against descending on instruments.
The solution isn’t more glideslope practice—it’s addressing the fear. Explain protected areas, demonstrate obstacle clearance, gradually build trust in the approach design. Their flying improves when the psychological barrier drops, not because they practiced more.
Effective Communication — Basic Elements of Communication
Communication in flight instruction has unique demands. The helicopter cockpit is noisy, vibrating, and distracting. IFR training adds workload—radios, navigation, procedures. Messages must be clear, concise, and timed appropriately.
The Communication Cycle:
Source — You, the instructor, with knowledge to transfer. Your responsibility: ensure the message is worth sending and properly constructed. In the IFR environment, less is more. Don’t talk during high-workload phases unless safety requires it.
Symbols — The words, diagrams, demonstrations, and gestures you use. Choose symbols your student understands. “Lead the roll-out by one-half the bank angle” might be clear to an experienced pilot but meaningless to a new instrument student. “When you’re banked 20 degrees, start rolling out at 10 degrees before your heading” uses concrete numbers they can process.
Receiver — Your student, filtering your message through their experience, expectations, and current mental state. A student on their fifth approach of the day, tired and saturated, cannot process complex explanations. Recognize their capacity and adjust.
Feedback — The student’s response that lets you know if communication succeeded. In flight, verbal feedback is limited, so watch actions. If you say “track the localizer,” and they immediately correct toward centerline, communication worked. If they look confused and do nothing, it failed—regardless of how clear you thought you were.
Helicopter IFR Context:
During an actual IMC approach to an offshore platform in gusty winds, this is not the time for a detailed explanation of wind correction theory. Your communication must be brief and actionable: “Add five right” or “Power’s sagging—bring it up.” Save the teaching for the debrief.
During ground instruction before the flight, use detailed explanations, diagrams, and discussion. In the aircraft during training, use brief cues that trigger prepared responses. “Localizer” should prompt the student to check CDI and correct—they already know the theory.
The Three Communication Modes:

Verbal — Words spoken through the intercom. Use standard phraseology for procedures to build habit patterns. “Begin procedure turn now” is better than “Okay, so, um, I guess you should probably start turning now.” Clarity and authority reduce ambiguity.

Environmental Barriers:
Noise — Helicopter cockpits are loud. Even with ANR headsets, communication degrades. Speak clearly, verify understanding, use standard phraseology. Mumbling or trailing off mid-sentence creates confusion.
Vibration and Motion — Reading approach plates in turbulence is difficult. Timing matters—don’t hand a student a new plate to review during the final approach segment.
Workload — The single-pilot IFR helicopter environment creates intense cognitive load. A student flying an ILS in actual IMC while managing icing conditions and coordinating with ATC has no cognitive capacity for complex instructions. Your communication must be minimal and perfectly timed.
Psychological Barriers:
Confusion Between Symbol and Symbolic Object — Student reads “NoPT” on the chart and doesn’t understand it means “no procedure turn required.” The symbol failed to communicate. You must ensure students understand the language of instrument charts—symbols that are obvious to you may be foreign to them.
Overuse of Abstractions — “Maintain situational awareness” is too abstract. “Check your position relative to the IAF every thirty seconds and confirm you know which segment you’re flying” is concrete and actionable.
Interference — Preoccupation blocks communication. A student worried about an upcoming checkride, distracted by personal problems, or fixated on a previous mistake cannot receive new information. Recognize interference and address it or reschedule.
Lack of Common Experience — If you learned instruments in fixed-wing and now teach helicopters, avoid airplane-centric explanations. Helicopter students don’t understand constant-speed props or landing flare—these references create confusion rather than clarity. Stay within the helicopter world.
Physiological Barriers:
Illness, Fatigue, Stress — A student fighting a headache or running on four hours of sleep cannot process complex information. Their communication reception is impaired. Recognize this and adjust or cancel.
Hearing Problems — Some students have difficulty with intercom frequencies or certain voice tones. Verify they’re hearing you clearly. “Can you hear me clearly, or should I adjust the intercom?”
Practical Example:
You explain compass errors during a turn, but the student looks confused. Barrier analysis: They’re task-saturated trying to maintain altitude and heading while flying under the hood (workload barrier). The explanation used magnetic theory abstractions they don’t understand (overuse of abstraction). They’re also slightly airsick (physiological barrier). Solution: Table the explanation until after landing, keep them focused on the scan, debrief compass errors in the classroom with a diagram.
Effective Communication — Developing Communication Skills
Role-Playing and Practice
Teaching is a communication skill that improves with practice. Before the flight, practice your briefing out loud. “Today we’re working on holding pattern entries. You’ll fly six different holds—two direct, two teardrop, two parallel. Your job is to identify the entry, brief it to me, and fly it within PTS standards. Questions?” Rehearsing creates clarity.
Constructive Criticism Techniques:
The CFII Sandwich Model (Specific, not generic)
- Specific positive — “Your altitude control during that approach was within fifty feet throughout—that’s well above standard.”

Never use generic praise (“Good job!”) or generic criticism (“That was sloppy”). Both are lazy communication that fails to teach.
Listening Skills:
Effective communication requires listening as much as talking. When a student explains their thought process during an approach, listen completely before correcting. Often they self-correct as they verbalize. “I was high on the glideslope because I… oh, I see, I added power when I should have reduced it.” That’s deeper learning than if you’d interrupted with the correction.
Ask open-ended questions: “Walk me through your decision to descend early at the FAF” reveals their understanding. “Why did you descend early?” sounds accusatory and triggers defense mechanisms.
Questioning Techniques:
Fact Questions — “What’s the published hold direction at ALPHA?” Tests knowledge recall.
HOTS (Higher-Order Thinking Skills) Questions — “If you arrive at ALPHA with GPS failure and need to hold, how will you identify the fix and fly the hold using VOR only?” Requires analysis and problem-solving.
Use both types strategically. Fact questions verify foundational knowledge. HOTS questions develop the judgment needed for single-pilot IFR decision-making.
Instructional Communication:
Use the Telling-and-Doing technique for new procedures:
- Instructor tells, instructor does — Demonstrate the ILS approach while narrating every action.
- Student tells, instructor does — Student directs you through the approach step-by-step.
- Student tells, student does — Student flies and narrates simultaneously.
- Student does — Student flies independently while you monitor.
This progression builds both skill and communication ability—essential because the checkride requires explaining while demonstrating.
Written Communication:
Teach students to create approach briefing cards with standardized formats. This develops their ability to organize and communicate information systematically—a critical IFR skill. Review their briefing cards and provide feedback on clarity and completeness.

Maintain Professional Instructional Standards:
- Display confidence and competence in presenting material
- Create positive learning environment even under evaluation pressure
- Use Ryan Dale’s teaching approach: direct, specific, encouraging, practical
- Avoid fixed-wing references or inappropriate analogies
- Demonstrate the professional demeanor expected of a helicopter CFII
The presentation meets standards when the evaluator determines the candidate possesses both adequate knowledge of human behavior and effective communication principles AND the ability to teach these concepts to instrument students in a manner that would improve their instructional effectiveness. The candidate must demonstrate they can help future CFIIs recognize student psychological states, adapt communication strategies, and create learning environments that produce safe, competent helicopter instrument pilots.
Performance is evaluated against PTS standards for Area of Operation I (Fundamentals of Instructing), Task B (Human Behavior and Effective Communication), which requires demonstration of instructional knowledge and teaching ability for all specified knowledge elements.
