Objective

Upon completion of this lesson, the CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach taxi operations with wheel-type landing gear to appropriate ACS standards. The candidate will explain and demonstrate proper taxi procedures, risk management techniques, and error recognition while maintaining teaching effectiveness. This lesson addresses ACS task HI.VIII.D and prepares the CFI candidate to instruct students in safe ground operations at controlled and uncontrolled airports.

Introduction to Taxi Operations

Taxiing a helicopter with wheel-type landing gear is fundamentally different from fixed-wing aircraft operations. Unlike airplanes that rely primarily on rudder pedals and differential braking, helicopters require coordinated use of all flight controls even during ground operations. The helicopter’s dynamic nature means that improper control inputs during taxi can lead to dynamic rollover, loss of directional control, or rotor strikes.

Airport References and Information Resources (K1)

Effective taxi operations begin with thorough preparation using current aeronautical references:

Chart Supplement: Contains critical heliport and airport information including taxi restrictions, noise abatement procedures, and helicopter-specific operating procedures. Many airports have designated helicopter taxi routes that differ from fixed-wing operations.

Airport Diagrams: Essential for route planning and identifying potential hazards. Hot spots are clearly marked areas where runway incursions or ground conflicts frequently occur. As instructors, we must emphasize that students should always have the airport diagram readily available during taxi operations.

NOTAMs: Provide current information about closed taxiways, construction, or temporary restrictions that could affect helicopter operations. Helicopter operations may be affected by NOTAMs that don’t impact fixed-wing aircraft due to our unique operational requirements.

Taxi Instructions and Clearances (K2)

Ground control clearances for helicopters often include specific routes and altitudes. Key elements include:

Teaching technique: Use the phonetic alphabet consistently and emphasize proper readback procedures. Students must understand that taxi clearances are not requests but mandatory instructions.
