Objective

Upon completion of this lesson, the CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to effectively teach straight-and-level flight to helicopter students by explaining the basic aerodynamic principles, flight control usage, visual references, integrated flight instruction techniques, and common errors while simultaneously demonstrating proper control inputs and corrections in accordance with ACS standards for task HI.XI.A.

Basic Elements of Aircraft and Aerodynamics (HI.XI.A.K1)

Straight-and-level flight represents the fundamental equilibrium state where all aerodynamic forces are balanced. As an instructor, you must teach students that this maneuver requires understanding four primary forces and how helicopter controls affect them.

The Four Forces in Equilibrium:

Think of the helicopter like balancing a dinner plate on a stick—constant micro-adjustments maintain equilibrium, but the goal is smooth, coordinated control rather than jerky corrections.

The CFI candidate will demonstrate instructional competence by:

  1. Explaining Aerodynamic Theory: Draw force diagrams showing balanced flight conditions and explain how control inputs affect force balance using clear analogies

  2. Demonstrating Control Integration: Using training device or aircraft controls, show smooth, coordinated inputs while explaining the relationship between collective, cyclic, and pedal controls

  3. Teaching Visual Scan Techniques: Model proper outside-to-inside reference scanning while maintaining straight-and-level flight, verbalizing thought process

  4. Identifying and Correcting Common Errors: Demonstrate typical student errors and show proper correction techniques while explaining the underlying causes

  5. Emphasizing Risk Management: Point out potential hazards and demonstrate proper clearing procedures, task prioritization, and situational awareness techniques

  6. Conducting Integrated Flight Instruction: Show progression from demonstration through guided practice to independent performance while maintaining safety oversight

Student Actions

The student (DPE acting as student) will:

  1. Ask relevant questions about aerodynamic principles and control relationships to test instructor’s knowledge depth

  2. Demonstrate understanding by correctly identifying the four forces and explaining how controls affect each force

  3. Practice scan techniques by verbalizing the sequence of outside and inside references during simulated flight

  4. Identify common errors from instructor-provided scenarios and suggest appropriate correction methods

  5. Demonstrate situational awareness by recognizing risk factors and proposing mitigation strategies

  6. Show learning progression by moving from passive observation through guided practice to independent demonstration

Completion Standards

The CFI candidate successfully completes this lesson when they demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Clearly explain all aerodynamic principles affecting straight-and-level flight including the four forces, rotor disc effects, and control relationships per HI.XI.A.K1

  2. Accurately describe flight control functions and demonstrate proper control coordination and trim usage per HI.XI.A.K2

  3. Effectively teach visual reference techniques including proper scan patterns and integration of outside/inside references per HI.XI.A.K3

  4. Apply integrated flight instruction methods showing logical lesson progression and positive transfer techniques per HI.XI.A.K4

  5. Identify and demonstrate correction of common errors including altitude, heading, attitude, and scan pattern deviations per HI.XI.A.K5

  6. Address all risk management elements including distraction management, task prioritization, and collision avoidance per HI.XI.A.R1 and HI.XI.A.R2

  7. Demonstrate teaching skills that would enable a student to establish and maintain straight-and-level flight within ACS standards and analyze/correct related errors per HI.XI.A.S1 and HI.XI.A.S2

The lesson meets ACS task HI.XI.A standards when the CFI candidate displays instructional competence that would enable effective teaching of straight-and-level flight fundamentals to helicopter students.
