Objective

The CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach preflight assessment by explaining and demonstrating pilot self-assessment, helicopter airworthiness determination, systematic preflight inspection procedures, and environmental factor evaluation. The candidate will effectively communicate the critical safety aspects of preflight assessment while showing proper teaching techniques for both ground and practical instruction phases.

Pilot Self-Assessment (HI.VI.A.K1, HI.VI.A.R1, HI.VI.A.S3)

Teaching Point: Every flight begins with an honest look in the mirror. The IMSAFE checklist isn’t just letters—it’s your personal pre-flight inspection.

IMSAFE Breakdown:

Teaching Technique: Use the “helicopter cockpit analogy”—just as we check engine parameters before flight, we must check our personal parameters. A helicopter won’t fly safely with contaminated fuel; we can’t fly safely with a contaminated mindset.

Personal Minimums: Encourage students to establish written personal minimums for weather, experience, and proficiency. These should be more conservative than regulatory minimums.
