Objective

The CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach slope operations to the ACS standards for Task HI.18.E. Upon completion, the candidate will effectively explain and demonstrate parallel slope operations within manufacturer limitations or 5-10 degrees if no limitations are published, emphasizing thorough area assessment and risk management. The candidate will teach proper techniques for approaching, landing on, and departing from sloped terrain while maintaining aircraft control and safety margins.

Introduction to Slope Operations

Slope operations represent one of the most challenging and potentially hazardous helicopter maneuvers. Think of it like parking a car on a steep hill - you need to understand the forces at work and have specific techniques to maintain control. The helicopter’s center of gravity, rotor system limitations, and ground contact points all create unique challenges when operating on sloped surfaces.

Manufacturer Limitations and Standards (HI.XVIII.E.K1, HI.XVIII.E.K2)

Published Limitations: When manufacturer slope limitations exist, they are absolute - never exceed them. These limitations consider:

Standard Practice Limitations: When no published limitations exist, restrict parallel slope operations to approximately 5-10 degrees maximum. This conservative approach provides safety margins for:
