Objective

Upon completion of this lesson, the CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach night operations to helicopter students by explaining the physiological aspects of night vision, lighting systems, equipment requirements, navigation techniques, and visual illusions while identifying and managing associated risks. The candidate will effectively teach at least one knowledge element from HI.III.K.K1 through K10 using appropriate instructional techniques and visual aids.

Physiological Aspects of Night Vision (HI.III.K.K1)

Rod and Cone Vision The human eye contains two types of photoreceptors: rods and cones. Cones provide color vision and sharp detail in bright light but become ineffective in low light. Rods detect motion and provide vision in dim light but cannot distinguish colors. Night vision relies primarily on rod vision, which takes 30 minutes to fully adapt to darkness.

Dark Adaptation Process Dark adaptation occurs in two phases:

White light destroys dark adaptation instantly, while red light preserves it. Think of your eyes like a camera adjusting to darkness - you wouldn’t use a flash just before taking a low-light photo.

The CFI candidate will:

  1. Open the lesson by explaining the importance of night operations and establishing learning objectives
  2. Demonstrate night vision physiology using practical examples and analogies (comparing eyes to camera adjustment)
  3. Explain lighting systems by pointing out symbols on sectional charts and describing their meanings
  4. Review equipment requirements by systematically going through 14 CFR 91.205(c) and explaining each item’s purpose

Throughout the lesson, the CFI candidate will maintain proper teaching posture, use clear explanations with appropriate analogies, and encourage evaluator participation through questions and scenarios.
