Objective
Upon completion of this lesson, the CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach the National Airspace System by accurately explaining airspace classes, requirements, and limitations; identifying chart symbols and special use airspace; demonstrating currency requirements for publications; and effectively instructing students on VFR requirements and risk management strategies for operating in various airspace types. The candidate will meet the standards outlined in ACS task HI.III.F with emphasis on developing student understanding of airspace compliance and safety considerations specific to helicopter operations.

Introduction to National Airspace System (NAS)
The National Airspace System is the network of controlled and uncontrolled airspace, air navigation facilities, equipment, services, airports, aeronautical charts, information/services, rules, regulations, procedures, technical information, and personnel. For helicopter pilots, understanding airspace is critical because rotorcraft operations often occur at lower altitudes where multiple airspace types intersect.
Airspace Classes and Associated Requirements (HI.III.F.K1)
Class A Airspace (18,000 feet MSL to FL600)
- IFR operations only
- ATC clearance required
- Transponder with Mode C required

- VFR cloud clearance: 3-1-1 rule
- Common for helicopter training operations
Class E Airspace
- Controlled airspace not designated as A, B, C, or D
- No communication requirement below 10,000 feet MSL
