HI.XI.B ground lesson 45–60 minutes

Level Turns

Fundamentals of Flight · Task Task B. Level Turns

Completion Standards

CFI candidate demonstrates knowledge of all HI.XI.B items and ability to teach the concept effectively. All skill elements demonstrated to ACS standards.

Objective

The CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach level turns by explaining and demonstrating the purpose, procedures, flight control usage, visual references, and common errors while maintaining instructional standards per HI.XI.B. Upon completion, the CFI candidate will effectively teach a student to establish, maintain, and roll out of level turns while managing associated risks and correcting common errors.

Content

Purpose and Procedures for Level Turns (HI.XI.B.K1)

Level turns are fundamental flight maneuvers where the helicopter changes heading while maintaining constant altitude and airspeed. The purpose includes:

Standard procedures:

  1. Clear the area and establish straight-and-level flight
  2. Select reference point for turn completion
  3. Apply smooth, coordinated control inputs
  4. Maintain altitude and airspeed throughout
  5. Roll out smoothly to desired heading

Flight Control and Trim Use (HI.XI.B.K2)

In helicopter level turns, control inputs work together:

Think of it like riding a bicycle around a corner - you lean into the turn (bank), maintain forward momentum (airspeed), and keep steering straight ahead (coordination).

Visual References (HI.XI.B.K3)

Effective visual reference techniques include:

The 80/20 rule applies: 80% outside visual references, 20% instrument cross-check.

Integrated Flight Instruction (HI.XI.B.K4)

Effective level turn instruction integrates:

Common Errors (HI.XI.B.K5)

Typical student errors include:

Risk Management

Distractions and Loss of Situational Awareness (HI.XI.B.R1)

Collision Hazards (HI.XI.B.R2)
