Completion Standards

CFI candidate demonstrates knowledge of all FI.I.B items and ability to teach the concept effectively. All skill elements demonstrated to ACS standards.

Objective

Upon completion of this lesson, the CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach the learning process to helicopter flight students by accurately explaining learning theories, characteristics, and domains while applying educational principles to practical flight training scenarios. The candidate will meet the knowledge, risk management, and skill requirements of ACS task FI.I.B.

Content

Learning Definitions (FI.I.B.K1)

Learning is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, or attitudes that result in a relatively permanent change in behavior. In helicopter training, this manifests as a student progressing from no knowledge of collective control to smoothly managing power changes during approaches.

Perception is how students interpret sensory information. Insight is the “aha moment” when concepts suddenly make sense.

Acquiring Knowledge (FI.I.B.K4)

Knowledge acquisition follows a progression:

  1. Memorization - Learning facts and procedures
  2. Understanding - Grasping relationships and principles
  3. Application - Using knowledge in new situations

Example: Student memorizes height-velocity diagram (memorization), understands why avoid dead man’s curve (understanding), applies during flight planning (application).

Laws of Learning (FI.I.B.K5)

  1. Readiness - Student must be prepared and motivated
  2. Exercise - Repetition strengthens learning
  3. Effect - Satisfying experiences promote learning
  4. Primacy - First learning is strongest and most resistant to change
  5. Intensity - Vivid, exciting experiences are best remembered
  6. Recency - Most recent learning is best remembered

SBT places learning in realistic operational contexts rather than isolated maneuvers. Benefits include:

Acquiring Skill Knowledge (FI.I.B.K9)

Stages of Skill Acquisition:

  1. Cognitive - High mental workload, many errors
  2. Associative - Fewer errors, refining technique
  3. Autonomous - Automatic performance, low mental workload

Knowledge of Results: Feedback about performance quality. Must be specific, timely, and constructive.

Skill Development:

Learning Plateaus: Temporary periods of no apparent progress. Normal part of learning process. Overcome through varied practice and motivation maintenance.

The evaluator (acting as student) will:

  3. Challenge the candidate with scenarios requiring application of learning principles to unexpected situations

  4. Evaluate the candidate’s responses to questions about adapting instruction for different learning styles and capabilities

  5. Assess the candidate’s ability to explain complex concepts in simple, understandable terms

  6. Observe demonstration techniques and provide feedback opportunities for the candidate to practice critique skills

Completion Standards

The CFI candidate demonstrates satisfactory performance in accordance with FI.I.B when they:

  1. Accurately explain all learning definitions and theories (FI.I.B.K1, K2) with clear helicopter training applications and can articulate the difference between behaviorist and cognitive approaches

  2. Comprehensively present the six laws of learning (FI.I.B.K5) with specific, relevant examples from helicopter instruction and demonstrate understanding of their practical application

  3. Clearly distinguish between the three learning domains (FI.I.B.K6) using appropriate helicopter training examples for each domain and explain their interaction in flight training

  4. Demonstrate understanding of scenario-based training (FI.I.B.K8) by creating and explaining a realistic helicopter training scenario that integrates multiple learning objectives

  5. Explain memory systems and enhancement techniques (FI.I.B.K14) with specific applications to helicopter procedures and demonstrate at least three memory improvement strategies
