CFI candidate demonstrates knowledge of all HI.XIV.A items and ability to teach the concept effectively. All skill elements demonstrated to ACS standards.

Objective

The CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach ground resonance to include conditions contributing to its onset, preventive techniques, inspection items, corrective actions, and common errors. Upon completion, the CFI candidate will effectively explain and demonstrate ground resonance concepts in accordance with ACS task HI.XIV.A.

Content

Ground Resonance Fundamentals

Ground resonance is a violent, destructive vibration that occurs when the helicopter’s rotor system frequency coincides with the helicopter’s natural frequency while in contact with the ground. Think of it like pushing someone on a swing - if you push at the wrong time, nothing happens, but push at exactly the right frequency and the swing goes higher and higher until it becomes uncontrollable.

Critical Decision Point: The key is recognizing the onset quickly. If you have sufficient power and the vibration just started, getting airborne is often the best solution. If vibrations are severe or power is insufficient, immediate shutdown is required.

Progressive Development: Ground resonance typically builds rapidly. The vibrations start small but increase exponentially - like a small earthquake becoming a major one in seconds.

Use analogies students understand: ground resonance is like a washing machine with unbalanced clothes - it starts with a small wobble but quickly becomes violent and destructive. The only solutions are to stop it immediately or remove the source of imbalance.

The CFI candidate’s performance will be satisfactory when they can teach ground resonance in accordance with HI.XIV.A and demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Clearly explain conditions that contribute to ground resonance including mechanical, environmental, and operational factors per HI.XIV.A.K1a and HI.XIV.A.R1

  2. Demonstrate preventive flight techniques for takeoffs and landings with emphasis on surface selection per HI.XIV.A.K1b and HI.XIV.A.K1c

  3. Identify inspection items that contribute to ground resonance and explain their importance per HI.XIV.A.K2

  4. Explain corrective actions for both low and normal rotor RPM scenarios with proper decision-making criteria per HI.XIV.A.K3 and HI.XIV.A.R3

  5. Recognize and teach onset symptoms and factors per HI.XIV.A.R2

  6. Analyze common errors and provide effective prevention strategies per HI.XIV.A.K4
