Endorsements and Logbook Entries

Objective

Upon completion of this lesson, the CFI candidate will demonstrate competency in teaching endorsements and logbook entries as required by ACS task HI.III.J by:

• Explaining all required logbook entries and endorsements for helicopter instruction
• Demonstrating proper preparation of at least two specific endorsement examples
• Teaching the importance of precise endorsement language and proper record keeping
• Identifying risks associated with improper endorsements and mitigation strategies

Content

Required Logbook Entries for Instruction Given (HI.III.J.K1)

As a helicopter CFI, you must make specific logbook entries for all instruction given. Per 14 CFR 61.189, you must sign the logbook or training record of each person to whom you provided flight training or ground training and include:

• Date of instruction
• Type and duration of training given
• Your signature, certificate number, and certificate expiration date

Think of your signature as your professional guarantee - you’re certifying that the training occurred and met standards. In helicopters, this is particularly critical given the complexity of operations like autorotations and confined area work.

Student Pilot Pre-Solo Requirements (HI.III.J.K2)

Before a helicopter student can solo, you must ensure they pass a pre-solo knowledge test covering:

• Applicable regulations (Part 61, 91, NTSB 830)
• Flight characteristics and operational limitations
• Performance calculations and limitations
• Emergency procedures specific to the helicopter model

The solo endorsement must be specific to the make and model of helicopter. Unlike airplanes, helicopter endorsements cannot use generic language due to significant performance differences between models (R22 vs R44 vs Schweizer 300, etc.).

Required endorsements include:

• Pre-solo aeronautical knowledge (90-day validity)
• Pre-solo flight training endorsement
• Solo flight endorsement (90-day initial, renewable)

Other Required Pilot Logbook Endorsements (HI.III.J.K3)

Helicopter-specific endorsements include:

• Touchdown autorotation endorsement: Required before PIC operations in helicopters per manufacturer recommendations
• SFAR 73 (Robinson R22/R44): Special training and endorsement requirements for Robinson helicopters including awareness training and checkout requirements
• Complex helicopter endorsement: For helicopters with retractable gear, controllable pitch propeller, or turbine engine
• High-performance endorsement: Generally not applicable to helicopters under current definitions

Practical Test Recommendations (HI.III.J.K4)

When recommending a student for a practical test, you must:

Initial Pilot Certification (Private, Commercial):

• Verify all aeronautical experience requirements are met
• Ensure all required endorsements are current
• Provide logbook endorsement stating applicant is prepared for the practical test
• Complete IACRA application as authorized instructor

Additional Pilot Certification (Instrument Rating, CFI):

• Same requirements as initial, plus verification of prerequisite certificates
• Additional endorsements may be required (instrument proficiency, etc.)

Additional Aircraft Qualification (Type Rating, Class Rating):

• Verify specific aircraft experience requirements
• Provide appropriate aircraft-specific endorsements

Flight Review Endorsements (HI.III.J.K5)

Per 14 CFR 61.56, flight review endorsements must include:

• Date of review
• Statement that review was satisfactory
• Type of review (biennial flight review or equivalent)
• Your signature, certificate number, and expiration date

For helicopters, ensure the review covers appropriate emergency procedures including autorotations, which are critical for safety.

Required Flight Instructor Records (HI.III.J.K6)

You must maintain records of:

• All students endorsed for solo flight (name, date of endorsement)
• All students endorsed for practical tests (retain until test is taken or endorsement expires)
• All flight review endorsements given

These records protect you legally and help track your instructional activity for currency and renewal purposes.

Renewal and Reinstatement Requirements (HI.III.J.K7)

CFI certificate renewal requires one of:

• 24 months of activity requirements (recommend 5+ students for practical test with 80%+ pass rate, OR conduct 20+ hours instruction, OR serve as company check airman, etc.)
• Completion of CFI renewal course (FIRC)
• Reinstatement practical test if expired

Risk Management (HI.III.J.R1): Endorsements without proper limitations or expiration dates create legal liability and safety risks. Always include specific limitations (aircraft make/model, airport restrictions, weather minimums) and expiration dates where required. Vague endorsements provide no protection and may exceed your authority as an instructor.

Instructor Actions

The CFI candidate will:

• Demonstrate ability to calculate and verify aeronautical experience requirements for helicopter ratings

• Explain the legal significance and liability aspects of each endorsement type
• Demonstrate use of precise regulatory language in endorsements
• Show proper record keeping procedures including required instructor records
• Explain SFAR 73 requirements and their impact on Robinson helicopter training
• Demonstrate the practical test recommendation process including IACRA procedures
• Identify common endorsement errors and their consequences
• Show how to research specific endorsement requirements using current regulations

The student will:

• Follow along with regulatory references as endorsement requirements are explained
• Ask questions about specific endorsement scenarios they may encounter
• Practice calculating aeronautical experience requirements
• Review sample endorsements and identify required elements
• Participate in discussion of common endorsement errors
• Take notes on record keeping requirements
• Practice using IACRA or understanding the application process

Completion Standards

The CFI candidate’s performance meets ACS standards for HI.III.J when they:

• Accurately explain all required logbook entries for instruction given per 14 CFR 61.189
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of student pilot endorsement requirements including pre-solo knowledge testing and solo endorsements
• Correctly describe helicopter-specific endorsements including touchdown autorotations and SFAR 73 requirements
• Successfully prepare at least two different types of endorsements/logbook entries as specified in K1-K5 with proper regulatory language and required elements
• Accurately explain flight review endorsement requirements and completion criteria
• Describe all required flight instructor record keeping requirements per 14 CFR 61.189
• Correctly explain CFI renewal and reinstatement requirements including activity standards and alternatives
• Identify risks of improper endorsements and demonstrate use of appropriate limitations and expiration dates
• Use precise regulatory language and include all required elements in sample endorsements
• Demonstrate ability to research and verify endorsement requirements using current regulations
