Objective

Upon completion of this lesson, the CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach communications, light signals, and runway lighting systems for helicopter operations. The candidate will effectively explain radio procedures, emergency communication protocols, and lighting systems while demonstrating proper instructional techniques. This lesson supports ACS task HI.VII.B and prepares the candidate to teach student pilots safe and effective communication practices in the airport environment.

Content

Radio Frequency Selection and Management

Teaching students how to obtain appropriate radio frequencies begins with understanding the hierarchy of information sources. The primary reference is the Chart Supplement (formerly A/FD), which provides comprehensive frequency listings for each airport. Sectional charts show basic frequencies, while approach plates contain detailed communication requirements for instrument procedures.

For helicopter operations, emphasize the importance of monitoring multiple frequencies when operating in complex airspace. Unlike fixed-wing aircraft that typically follow predictable traffic patterns, helicopters often operate at lower altitudes and may need to coordinate with ground control, tower, approach control, and company frequencies simultaneously.

Teaching tip: Use the analogy of a telephone directory - students must know where to look up the right “phone number” for each facility they need to contact.

Proper Radio Communication Procedures

Standard phraseology follows the “who, where, what” format. Students must understand that clear, concise communication prevents misunderstandings that could lead to incidents. The AIM provides the foundation for all radio procedures, but helicopter-specific considerations include:

Demonstrate the difference between standard and non-standard phraseology through examples. Standard: “Helicopter 123AB, two miles southeast of the hospital, 800 feet, inbound for landing.” Non-standard: “Hey tower, this is the red helicopter coming in from the south side.”

ATC Light Signal Recognition

Light signals serve as backup communication when radio contact is lost. Students must memorize the meanings and appropriate responses for both aircraft on the ground and in flight. Create memory aids to help students distinguish between similar signals:

Transponder Operations

Modern transponder systems require understanding of Mode A, C, and S capabilities. Teach the standard codes (1200 VFR, 7500 hijack, 7600 communication failure, 7700 emergency) and emphasize the importance of proper code entry and altitude reporting accuracy.

For helicopter operations, discuss the challenges of altitude encoding accuracy when operating at low altitudes and in confined areas where GPS altitude may differ significantly from pressure altitude.

Lost Communication Procedures

Communication failures fall into two categories: equipment failure and inability to establish contact. Teach students to troubleshoot systematically:

  1. Check volume and squelch settings
  2. Verify correct frequency
  3. Check microphone and headset connections
  4. Try backup radio if available
  5. Use light signals or other aircraft as relay

In controlled airspace, emphasize the importance of continuing flight according to the last received clearance or as filed. For VFR flights, squawk 7600 and land at the nearest suitable airport.

Equipment Issues and Communication Failures

Common equipment problems include:

Radar Assistance Services

ATC radar services include traffic advisories, safety alerts, and navigation assistance. Students must understand how to request services and the limitations of radar coverage, particularly at low altitudes where helicopters typically operate.

Teach the difference between radar contact and radar services. Radar contact means ATC can see your transponder return; radar services mean ATC is actively providing traffic advisories or navigation assistance.

Modern airports employ various lighting systems to enhance safety:
