Objective

Upon completion of this lesson, the CFI candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach aircraft requirements and limitations for helicopter practical tests. The candidate will explain regulatory requirements, identify inoperative equipment considerations, and demonstrate proper aircraft verification procedures in accordance with ACS task HI.18.A.

Introduction to Aircraft Requirements & Limitations

As helicopter flight instructors, we must ensure our students understand the critical aircraft requirements for practical tests. Think of this like preparing for a championship game - you wouldn’t show up with broken equipment and expect to perform well. The same principle applies to checkrides.

14 CFR 61.45 - Aircraft Requirements for Practical Tests

The foundation regulation governing aircraft requirements is 14 CFR 61.45. This regulation establishes minimum standards that aircraft must meet for practical test use:

14 CFR 91.213 - Inoperative Equipment

When equipment is inoperative, we must determine if the aircraft can still be operated legally. This is where 91.213 becomes crucial:

  1. Is the inoperative equipment required by regulation (91.205, type certificate, etc.)?
  2. If required - aircraft is not airworthy until repaired
  3. If not required - can it be placarded inoperative and deferred?
